Crochet Bubble Stitch Pillow Cover

PILLOW COVER WITHOUT ZIPPER

Here's a free crochet pattern to make a bubble stitch pillow cover like the one above. This is for a standard 16"x16" throw pillow insert.

Stitches You'll Use

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

bo - bobble stitch: yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops repeat 4 more times in same st. You’ll have 6 loops on hook. Yo, pull through all 6 loops. Push bobble to front.

Pattern - Make 2 Panels

Panel Setup

Ch 49. This gives you 48 stitches across + turning chain. Adjust in multiples of 4 + 1 for different sizes.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. 48 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3 - Bobble Row: Sc in first 2 sts, bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts repeat across until 2 sts remain, sc in last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4-5: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 6: Sc in first 4 sts, bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts repeat across until 4 sts remain, sc in last 4 sts. Ch 1, turn. This staggers the bubbles.

Row 7-8: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 3-8 until panel measures 16" tall, about 48 rows total. End on a Row 5 or 8, so both sides are flat. Fasten off.

Make a second panel the same way.

Assembly

Place panels with wrong sides together, bubbles facing out.

Join 3 sides: Sc through both layers around 3 edges. Work 3 sc in each corner.

Insert your 16"x16" pillow form.

Close 4th side: Continue sc through both layers. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tips for Best Bubbles

Pull your bobbles tight — loose tension makes them saggy.

Block both panels before seaming so they lay flat.

For extra puff, use a smaller hook just for the bobble rows.

PILLOW COVER WITH ZIPPER

Here’s the full bubble stitch pillow pattern scaled for a 20"x20" insert with a zipper closure.

Materials for 20x20

Pattern - Make 2 Identical Panels

Panel Setup

Ch 61. This gives you 60 stitches across + turning chain.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. 60 sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3 - Bobble Row 1: Sc in first 2 sts, bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts repeat across until 2 sts remain, sc in last 2 sts. You’ll have 14 bobbles. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4-5: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 6 - Bobble Row 2: Sc in first 4 sts, bo in next st, sc in next 3 sts repeat across until 4 sts remain, sc in last 4 sts. Staggered bobbles = 13 bobbles. Ch 1, turn.

Row 7-8: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 3-8 until you have 60 rows total, or panel measures 20" tall. You should end after a Row 5 or Row 8 so the top edge is flat. Fasten off.

Make the second panel exactly the same.

Adding the Zipper

Step 1: Prep edges

Work 1 row of sc along the bottom edge of each panel. 60 sc per panel. This stabilizes the edge. Do not fasten off the second panel — you’ll use this yarn to start seaming.

Step 2: Sew zipper

Open zipper halfway. Place zipper face down on right side of one panel’s sc edge. Pin it.

With needle + thread or slip stitches, sew zipper tape to crochet. Keep stitches small so they don’t show.

Repeat for second panel. Make sure the zipper pull is inside when panels are right sides together.

Step 3: Seam 3 sides

With right sides together and zipper half open, join yarn at one zipper end.

Sc through both layers up the side, across the top, and down the other side. Work 3 sc in each corner so it lies flat.

Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Step 4: Turn right side out through the zipper, pop in your 20"x20" pillow form, zip it up.

Quick Tips

Bigger bubbles: Use a 6mm hook for bobble rows only, or do a 6-dc bobble instead of 5-dc.

Zipper type: Use a basic nylon coil zipper in a matching color. Metal zippers snag yarn.

Hiding the zipper: Make an extra 2 rows of sc on each panel before attaching the zipper. The zipper will sit deeper and the crochet “lips” will cover the teeth.
