Large circular mandala rug

Here’s a beginner-friendly pattern to get that large circular mandala rug look like the one above. This uses cotton yarn for durability and washable texture.

Mandala Crochet Rug Pattern
Skill level: Easy to intermediate
Finished size: ∼32 inches diameter, but easy to adjust
Yarn: 600-800g of bulky/t-shirt yarn or 3-4 strands of worsted cotton held together
Hook: 10mm / N-15 or size needed for tight, flat fabric

Abbreviations
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
inc = 2 dc in same stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)

Pattern
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 2, 12 dc into ring. Sl st to first dc. 12 sts
Round 2: Ch 2, inc in each st around. Sl st to first dc. 24 sts
Round 3: Ch 2, 1 dc, inc repeat around. Sl st. 36 sts
Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc, inc repeat around. Sl st. 48 sts
Round 5: Ch 2, 3 dc, inc repeat around. Sl st. 60 sts
Round 6: Ch 2, dc in back loop only around for texture ridge. Sl st. 60 sts
Round 7-8: Ch 2, 4 dc, inc then 5 dc, inc on next round. This keeps it flat.
Round 9: Ch 1, sc, ch 3, skip 1 repeat for lacy ring detail like in the photo. Sl st.
Round 10: Ch 2, 3 dc in each ch-3 space around for scallop edge. Sl st.
Round 11+: Keep increasing every few rounds: dc X, inc where X increases by 1 each increase round. For mandala look, add a round of puff stitch, ch 1 every 4-5 rounds.
Final round: Reverse sc/crab stitch around for a neat, non-curling edge.

To adjust size: Keep repeating the increase pattern. Rule: Total sts = 12 x round number. If it ruffles, you increased too fast. If it bowls, increase more.

Color tips for that boho look:
Start with terracotta for 3 rounds, switch to cream for 4 rounds, add beige for the lacy round, then alternate.

Here’s the same mandala rug pattern with exact stitch counts by diameter. This assumes bulky/t-shirt yarn or 3 strands worsted + 10mm hook. Your gauge will vary, but this gets you flat every time.

Rule of thumb: For a flat circle, you add 12 stitches each round.
Total sts in Round N = 12 × N

Stitch counts by diameter

32 inch version — round by round
This matches the rug in the image above.

Round 1: Magic ring, ch 2, 12 dc. 12 sts
Round 2-5: Standard increases: inc every st, then 1 dc, inc, 2 dc, inc, 3 dc, inc. 60 sts after R5
Round 6: Back loop only dc around for ridge. 60 sts
Round 7-24: Keep increasing: Round N = (N-2) dc, inc repeat. So R7 = 4 dc, inc, R8 = 5 dc, inc... R24 = 21 dc, inc. 288 sts after R24
Add texture rounds: Every 4-5 rounds, swap a dc round for puff st, ch 1, skip 1 to get the mandala look. Do this on R9, R14, R19.
Lacy round: On R21 do sc, ch 3, skip 2 repeat. Then R22: 4 dc in each ch-3 space.
Round 24: Reverse sc around to finish. Blocks curling.

Yarn needed for 32 inch: ∼700g bulky cotton or 900g t-shirt yarn.

Pro tip: Check for flatness every 4 rounds. Lay it down — if it ruffles, skip an increase round. If it cups, add an extra increase round.
